Jim Bruton shares his near-death experience after a plane crash in 2016.
A lifelong vintage aircraft enthusiast, Jim built and flew reproductions, including a 1930s “Flying Flea.” On a test flight, the engine failed, crashed into tree trunks at 70 miles [112 kilometers] per hour, and Jim suffered all ribs broken, both lungs ruptured, fractures in his right knee, and a severe facial cut.
In the hospital, intubated and restrained due to delirium, doctors placed him in a medically induced coma, warning his family he might not survive.
In the coma, Jim found himself on a terrace overlooking a post-apocalyptic city, like New York [US] a thousand years after a catastrophe. Dark clouds signaled a storm. A wave of nausea hit him, and a noise drew him to a four-to-five-story egg-shaped lattice made of metal strips. Inside, gears—some solid, some ghostlike— moved slowly, some passing through each other. A calm, compassionate voice explained, “This is the future birthing into the now… the process of becoming.” The gears represented future events tied to his past choices: solid gears were near or likely, ghostlike ones distant or less probable.
When Jim touched a gear, nausea surged. Pulling it out caused the gears to reconfigure rapidly into a new pattern. The voice explained, “Each gear is the probability of a thought, word, or action in your future. Your destiny is resetting itself.” When asked why some gears caused pain, the voice said all choices have unintended consequences— some unfortunate, some not—and the pain was his guide. When Jim asked, “Where are the gears that feel good?” the voice calmly responded, “You’re not here to feel good.”
Looking closely, Jim saw some gears showed positive futures, like happy grandchildren, which he left. Others, causing pain, he removed to “clean up” his destiny. As the pile of discarded gears behind him grew, Jim feared removing them might shorten his life. The voice reassured him, “Your number of breaths are already counted. I will worry about your last one.”
Jim learned he was standing in “the In-Between… the Eternal Now.” Here, one dwells “inside the eternity of a single moment.” The voice told him you can’t change the past, but you can make better future choices; everything is interconnected. It urged him to “pay more attention to your relationships” and “be gentle with everyone as I am gentle with you.” It added that removing bad choices would not guarantee Jim wouldn’t make wrong ones; some mistakes are inevitable, so it is better to trust how everything “fits and refits” and “have faith in The Grand Design.” The voice also said Divine Grace is a birthright, but must be chosen at the expense of worldly attachments. When Jim protested that “fixing my future is painful,” the voice replied that removing enthusiasm to forge new chains is less painful than carrying them once forged.
Finally, Jim took one last look at the stone-gray sky and dead city, touched the egg, and said, “I think I can live with this now.” He awoke in the hospital.
As he recovered, Jim remembered a past out-of-body experience from 2002, when he conversed with his mother’s soul before her death. She shared that part of their life’s purpose was to experience specific emotions together, reinforcing the voice’s message about the importance of relationships.
Jim’s near-death experience took away his fear of death. He believes it was a Divine encounter tailored to his engineering mind. He now lives authentically, focusing on relationships and letting go of attachments, guided by the voice’s wisdom: “All the force of will you will ever need is found in the art of letting go” (Tia Renee)
