American nurse Sonja Christensen shares her near-death experience: When she was 12 years old, Sonja visited a lake with her family of 13 siblings. Her father, a strong swimmer, threw her into the water as a playful way to teach swimming, as was common in their family. On this occasion, Sonja hit the water flat on her back, causing all the air to rush out of her lungs. She sank like a rock, deep into the dark, muddy water, initially thrashing in panic, thinking she was going to die.
Then, Sonja heard a beautiful, angelic voice, unlike anything she had ever heard, calmly say, “Stop thrashing.” Despite her initial resistance, the voice repeated, “Stop thrashing,” in a peaceful, matter-of-fact tone, like commenting on a pretty flower. When Sonja finally stopped, the water transformed from dark and murky to a beautiful pale green. Sonja saw water bubbles on plants that looked like little diamonds and a faint glow of the Sun filtering gently through the water. The water moved like a wave or curtain, and she observed small fish-people gobbling air bubbles. The voice said, “Calm, be calm, you’re okay, you’re okay,” in the most peaceful tone. It advised her, “As long as you continue to try, you will be successful in your life. Don’t be afraid. The fear is what will stop you.” Sonja felt so relaxed she could have fallen asleep, blanketed in profound peace and beauty.
Suddenly, her father grabbed her arm and dragged her to the surface. To Sonja, the experience felt like hours or even days, though it was likely brief. On the surface, CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] was administered, which was painful, and she vomited, longing to return to the peaceful underwater realm.
The voice remained unforgettable, and since then, Sonja has never feared death. Her experience has shaped her work in nursing and holistic practices, where she comforts those passing, assuring them there is nothing to fear, only pure Love from the Creator, regardless of beliefs or rituals (Tia Renee)
