The truth is that even a single drink can have profound negative effects on the body, and the risks go beyond what most realize. Alcohol, or ethanol, affects the brain by changing the way certain brain chemicals work – especially Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate. GABA helps slow things down in the brain, while glutamate does the opposite and keeps us alert. Alcohol increases the calming effects of GABA, which is why people feel drowsy or lose coordination. At the same time, it inhibits glutamate, which makes thinking and memory even more impaired. These chemical effects manifest in noticeable ways, influencing how a person thinks, moves, and interacts with their surroundings. Even one round of alcohol at this stage can harm a developing fetus. Alcohol crosses the placenta, exposing the baby to the same level as the mother. But unlike adults, the fetus doesn’t have the enzymes needed to break it down. That makes the developing brain especially vulnerable to damage. This can lead to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, or FASDs. These may cause learning difficulties, behavioral problems like hyperactivity and impulsivity, and trouble with social skills. The physical effects can be just as serious. Those with FASDs may have distinctive facial deformities, stunted growth, and damage to vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. Habitual drinking takes a serious toll on almost every organ in the body, leading to chronic health problems and irreversible damage. The brain also feels the effects, as prolonged alcohol use can shrink brain volume, impair cognitive abilities, and raise the risk of dementia and permanent memory loss.Alcohol, in any form, carries significant health risks – but the dangers are even greater when it comes to counterfeit products. One of the most harmful substances found in fake alcohol is methanol, a toxic chemical often used in industrial products like antifreeze, paint thinners, and fuels. When consumed, methanol is broken down into formaldehyde and formic acid – both highly toxic to the body.Remember, taking care of yourself is the greatest gift you can give to both your body and mind.
